The Impact of MP3 Players on FM Radio

I'm making a presentation next month on the "impact of MP3 players (iPod, Rio, etc.) on terrestrial radio ." I'm interested in gaining insight on the topic through your personal experience.

So... have you stopped listening to radio because your hubby gave you an iPod for Xmas? If you own an iPod, describe any "fatigue" you may have experienced (meaning, did you get tired of dumping songs into "the thing" - or creating your own "playlists," did you throw in the towel and go back to listening to ABC XYZ radio station?).

Radio stations with the "Jack, Dave, Bob" format (mix of 70's, 80', 90's, 00's rock - The Eagles + Guns & Roses + Nirvana + Dave Matthews Band) have grown in popularity. These stations sell themselves as "An iPod on shuffle on your radio." Can FM and MP3 live in perfect harmony?

Apple has sold over 28 million iPods so far (they expect to sell 14 million during the 1st quarter of this year)... should broadcasters be concerned?

I've got another question...how does cell phone use in the car affect radio use? Based on limited observation, it appears to me that people in their cars are doing a lot of talking on the phone...and that's got to affect radio listening.

My parents bought me an iBook when I graduated and it came with a free iPod Mini. I'm a radio and CD kind of gal, so I rarely use it. Although I admit they are very cool-looking, I don't like to walk from one class to another listening to music.
I love my talk radio and the only other time I listen to music is when I am in my home or in my car. All the other times I need my ears to be free to hear other people. Although I love the iPod design, I just don't find myself using it very often. Sorry Mom and Dad! :D

My parents got my brother an Ipod for his birthday this year. He really likes CD's and the radio so he really only uses the Ipod when he works out. My dad started listening to my brothers Ipod as well and wanted one to work out with, so he went and bought one. They asked me if I wanted one but I really don't. I like to listen to the radio and to my CD's and I would never use it.
I think it really depends on the person. My dad and brother love their Ipods however they don't use them all that often.
I don't think that broadcasters and radio stations have anything to worry about. It's just like when they came out with CD players. Sure people liked to listen to them but they always come back to the radio.

Yeah I agree with the fact that Radio has nothing to worry about. But I think soon they will have something to worry about, If more and more people start buying higher capacity iPods and have the music to put on them, why would they waste their time with radio, when they can go to whatever song they want at their fingertips, if your wanting an example, take me for instance, I have a 60 gig iPod loaded with 11,717 songs, most people would say it is ridiculous, "and in a way it is" but I am a DJ so I use it a lot for that. So for me I never use the radio because I don't need to, I pretty much have it all right there, and when I'm done listening in the car, I can continue the song wherever else I go with headphones ;)

In my opinion, radio will always be around in some form, although they may need to find new ways to reatract listeners. Myself, I don't have an actual mp3 player, but that is just because I don't need one... I pretty much only listen to music at home (on my computer) or in my car where I have an mp3 cd player which usually holds around 150 mp3s on a cd. Although I still listen to the radio occasionally, I find myself being less interested in it whenever a commercial comes on or they start repeating the same boring songs-so in responce I listen to my cd the rest of the way to my destination. I really have been listening to a lot less radio lately due to the ease of mp3 technology, so radio will most likely need to get reorganized eventually, whether that is through subscription or through some other innovative idea.

Its not always fun to hear your very best set of songs...its sometimes fun to hear someone trying so hard to sound funny or at least sentimental.Surely, Radio programs will never go out of fashion. No matter how may technological might come on to enahnce human recreation, radios will always be loved and listened.

Today the technology is changing so rapidly that we have to adopt the changes no matter what the old tradition is.
In think though these FM stations will not face a great problem now but they have worry about the future.Since FM stations are mainly focused on entertaintment and for that they uses wide variety of musics to attract the listeners with gossips and intterviews..So to survive these FM stations in this competion they should come out with some attractive and interactive programs for their listeners. Then only they can survive in this competing world.

different people have different interest. some people like radios but the others do not. i rarely listen to the radios because radios progrma are same and they are repeating same boring songs all the time. but i like the IPODS and MP3S because whatever i like i can put on these devices and listen all the time whereever i am. so the most of listeners are attracting towards IPODS and MP3S rather than radios.so the radio station must have to think about this scenario to grab the more attention of listener to the radios program

I think that everything that is associated with music should be concerned with mp3 players. Its getting to the point where you can pretty much get free music now and where you can just play your favorite song whenever you want instead of waiting for it to be on the radio. With the growth in mp3 players the rest of the music world should be very concerned.

Yes, I know that technology is getting more and more advanced but I wouldn't think that iPods or MP3 players are anything to worry about just yet when it comes to radio stations. Of course, like everyone around my age I have an MP3 player that as a matter of fact my boyfriend did get me for Christmas, however I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to hear some new songs every once in a while. Therefore, that is the time you start listening to the radio for a few days or so and get some ideas of what you want to put on your MP3 next. Also radio stations have fun contests where you can win cool stuff like money, gift certificates, or even concert tickets, and even though we may be more attached to our MP3s nothing beats hearing the real thing live and in person.
