Bye Bye Howard

Jacobs Media has reported that 70% of Howard Stern’s Rock listeners have decided not to “sign up” with Sirius Satellite. Approximately 20% of Stern’s audience has subscribed – another 10% plan on subscribing. Is this good news for terrestrial broadcasters fearing an audience exodus from FM rockers like WXRK in New York or KXTE in Las Vegas? Is Howard’s brand of radio wearing thin... or is it only a matter of time before a majority of Stern’s former audience “gives in” to the $12.95 price tag?

Howard Who? He's had his day...it's all over.

This situation reminds me a lot of what Professor Mullen says- "No brand, person, service, etc can stay at the top forever"
I never liked Stern, so this is actually good news for me! Also, I like XM radio much more than Sirius. I wonder who they will bring on next to try to save this disappointment.

I suspected people would not pay money to listen to Stern's radio show.I think people listened to his show out of a numb habit, or out of boredom.satellite radio is still needed some nurturing as far as popularity goes, and potential listeners aren't as informed.I think it was naive of stern to believe people would follow him to his new home on satellite radio.

I feel the same as some of the other responders that Sterns popularity is waning, but also there is a large price tag for satellite radio than just the subscription cost, there is also the equipment cost that goes in hand with the service, a person needs a reciever for their automoble and also a reciever for home use and most sattelite recievers do not carry the ability to recieve radio brodcast.

I can’t believe that Howard and his crew actually thought that his listeners, after being shafted, would get up and purchase the expensive satellite receiver and then pay the $13 subscription fee just to hear his talk show. I would listen to him every now and then, yea funny dude, but I would never go through the expense and hassle to follow him or any entertainer for that matter. I just hope that the 30% of his followers are prepared to get the ax once more

Howard has had a good run for many years and I watched him on the E channel for a while. I liked Howard's show mainly because of the bizzare indviduals that appeared on the show and the things that they were willing to do. Now that I think about it, I realize the only real reason I watched the show was because there was nothing else on during those hours of the night. Howard didn't take into account that the real reason people were watching the show was to see who was going to be on it and the type of acts they were going to perform. It never crossed his mind that people don't care to hear what he had to say? Huh, that's kind of self-centered of him.

I think people are just afraid to try new things - and they have to pay for it. I am hesitent when paying money for something that I am not sure I will like, so it does not surprise me that people are slow to try it.
If they let everyone have a month free, to see what the differences were, subscription might pick up.
I do think that given time it will pick up. People will get tired of the commercials on regular, and the limited stations. Once people start trying it, then the word will get out and people will have their families trying it. If my sister tried it and reccomended it, I would be far more likely to try it then if some average commercial or promo was trying to sell it.

I strongly believe that howard Stern switching to Sirius is the equivilent of someone being forced to switch to HDTV or not having any TV at all. Like HD, not everyone has Sirius radio yet so therefore switching brands means losing customers. Not to mention the price that comes with Sirius as well. If he could Howard should have found a way to be on both Sirius and FM because he probably made a lot of people angry to go along with losing a lot of fans. Howard better do something fast with his show because his run might be over real soon.

It depends on the radio show and the fans as far as who is willing to “give in”. It is not a question about how good Howard Stern is to the general public but how much his fans love him. They obviously like listening to him or else he wouldn’t still be on the air as It is but are they willing to pay?...that depends on the listener and their devotion to his show.
