Mass Comm Alum Featured in 5280 Magazine

Dana Perino, 1993 graduate of the Mass Communications program at CSU-Pueblo and former White House Press Secretary, is the feature story in this month's 5280 magazine. Of all the distinguished alums of our department, Ms. Perino is arguably our most famous and accomplished graduate.

Dana's rise to the top of the PR profession began with an interest in TV journalism and political reporting. While at CSU-Pueblo (USC at the time), she worked on the KTSC public affairs program Standoff, and on Capitol Journal...a weekly review of the Colorado legislature. Dana also participated as a member of the speech and debate team which was a powerhouse in the Rocky Mountain region. After graduation, Dana completed a masters degree in Public Affairs Reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Two years ago Dana presented the commencement speech to her alma mater. During her visit she spent time with MCCNM students and members of the Southern Colorado Press Club. In her presentation to that group of students and professionals, Dana recounted her college years and the path that led to the Whitehouse. Dana encouraged CSU-Pueblo MCCNM students to not be concerned that they are graduating from a small university that lacks the reputation of Ivy League schools. She reminded them that it is possible to get "there" (wherever "there" may be) from "here".

Since leaving the White House, Dana has been employed by Burson-Marsteller, a global public relations firm, served as a commentator for Fox News and other TV networks, and has recently been nominated by President Barack Obama to the Broadcasting Board of Governors--a board overseeing government-sponsored international broadcasting.

Dana continues to offer proof that talent + ambition + determination = success!

It is amazing to think that a person, especially a women, can graduate from our small university and become such a great success. It is a revelation to the way the world has become, and actually works. Those who are ambitious, strive to reach their goals, and never quit; seem to be the most successful in the world. This is a testament to Dana's hard work, and reaching goals she set for herself years ago.

Reading about Dana reminded me of the speach that Professor Mullen gave to us in class. Professor Mullen told us that if we are determined to finish our degree, dedicated to our education, and applied to the process, we can be successful too. Dana's story is inspiring. She is so successful, and she graduated from a small university in a small town. I am certainly inspired by her success to continue the hard work and finish degrees. Espcially during the week of finals, it is so easily to get overwhelmed and feel like giving up. However, Dana is proof that the hard work will pay off.

I know everyone is making a big deal out of her coming from CSU-P, but i think the best thing about all of this is that she is a person from our school. It doesn't matter that we are a small school. It's amazing that she was one of us in the same school and worked hard enough and succeeded. They always say you can do whatever you want if you put in the time and effort, and Dana is living proof of that statement.

This really shows that if you have the talent, it does not matter where you come from. When it gets down to brass tax, it's all about who can get it done or not. Dana is a perfect example because although she did not come from a big name school, she had the work ethic and skills to get the job done. It shows, especially for Mass Comm students like myself that having a degree is the most important part, no where it came from. Although that helps, making sure you also understand what your degree has tough over the years is huge, and this is what Dana has shown.

Ms. Perino is an example to students all over the country who dont go to a Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth that becoming as successful as you dream to be is very possible. In my business class we talked about how when you go into for an interview, they aren't as concerned with what school you went to, but what your capable of and what you can offer the company.
